Dude!..Dude?..Dude..Duuuuuude
Amy is mad at me for getting a gig before her in the "industry". Yesterday I went to be an extra in a commercial. That's right my acting career is further along than hers. (who cares I'm not an actor.) As a joke she sent me an ad looking for people who want to be an extra in a commercial. As a joke I responded to the ad and sent my picture. They wrote back.
Soooo I spent my day outside in 20°/20mph wind at The Meadowlands stadium in NJ. I met the bus in midtown Manhattan at 4:30am and they took us to the stadium for our 13 hour call. We shot some outside around the ticket booth and entry gates, some inside the stadium at the concession stand, on the escalator and in the upper deck of the stadium seats. This was the coldest day of my life. I think everyone of the 200+ extras had hypothermia. It had snowed and rained and frozen solid the day before so everything was covered in a shell of hard ice. Fun.
Oh yeah, the commercial is the sequel to the popular "Dude" commercials. You know, the Bud Light ones. This one is for THE SUPERBOWL, or so they told us. Look out for me in the background "acting" like an idiot. Here are some pictures taken from Zany's cell phone.(he went with me.)
Inside the "holding"[locker] room. Those bags on the shelf are full of bagels. One guy ate 6(I counted) and put 4 more in his pockets for later. He was not a clean person in any sense. I noticed that they will let anyone do this as long as they can show up. You had to be at least 25 years old to do this job so you would think that there would be a little maturity present. I felt like I was in middle school. I watched one guy stuff his pockets with 2 entire bags of Milkyway mini's and Kit-Kats. This was right after he dropped his 3rd bagel face down on the ground and proceeded to pick it up and eat it. Add to that 150 snot nosed hands grabbing at the M&Ms and Reeces Pieces. Gross. I skipped the candy.
Out side it was freezing cold. They gave me this sign and a foam finger. Neato.
The view from the seats.
You cant really tell from this picture but all the garbage and crap from Sunday Night football the night before was still there. I couldn't feel my face after about 10 minutes outside. I still have all my toes though.
On the field. They had football players and cheerleaders(brokedown looking actors) filming various things on the field. Not sure why they took us down there because all we did was stand around for 30 minutes and then go back up. This stadium looks better on TV.

Wegener's
Kidney failure is the ailment du mois. Last month it was pulmonary issues, or was it heart related? No one can seem to figure it out.
This is how it goes with Wegeners Disease or Wegener's Granulomatosis
A description:
Wegener's is a rare, potentially life-threatening form of inflammation of the blood vessels, called vasculitis.
This inflammation damages the walls of small- and medium-sized arteries and veins. The damage interferes with normal blood supply to nearby tissues, causing tissue in many parts of the body to be injured and destroyed.
Three areas in the body are affected most commonly — the upper airways (including the sinuses, trachea and nose), lungs and kidneys. Kidney damage affects 80% of those with Wegener's, but in many cases, this damage is mild and does not cause any symptoms. In about 20% of people with kidney damage from Wegener's, however, the damage is severe enough to cause symptoms of kidney failure caused by an inflammation of the kidneys. Less predictably, Wegener's granulomatosis involves other organs, including the eyes, ears, skin, joints, heart and nerves.
Although the exact cause of the inflamed blood vessels of Wegener's granulomatosis is unknown, research suggests an autoimmune disorder, an illness in which the body's immune defenses mistakenly attack the body's own cells and tissues. In Wegener's granulomatosis, this misdirected immune attack is aimed at the blood vessels, triggering inflammation and damage.
Wegener's granulomatosis is rare, affecting only 11 in every 1 million people each year in the United States. Although it has been reported in people of all races and age groups, it typically affects middle-aged Caucasians, usually beginning at about age 40 to 50. It is slightly more common in men.
So here it is. This is what he deals with on a daily basis. Whether it be incredibly painful joints that even Vicodin can't relieve or sleepless nights from the pain or regular hospital visits because of "flareups" or failing organs, these are the breaks.
This is the time in your life when you are forced to think about relationships, the future, the past, and the possibilities. The reasons for suffering are unknown to us but planned by the Almighty God. Is it a test? Is it punishment? No. It is simply part of a greater plan. One that started ages ago and has a victorious ending. So, that sounds great and all but what about my father today? What about my mother who loves him? Am I selfish to ask for his recovery because it's what I want?
"God please forget what you had in store and just help him. This is what I think is best and you should do it".
Or rather,
"God I know you know what you're doing. You allowed this to happen. You created pain so that there can be joy and darkness so that there can be light. I give you glory God, no matter what happens. I have given my life my future and everything involved to you. Use it."
Faith can move mountains right? Can my faith cure this disease? Can I have so much faith that God will hear me and reward my faith by curing this disease?
Yes.
Please pray with me that My dad, Jim DeVore, will be healed and able to live his life normally. Pray for a simple and effective treatment. Pray for the doctors minds. Pray that God will show them something new about this disease. Pray for my mom who is by his side as they wonder what will happen.
Thanks,
Scott

Scrooge McDuck don't give a....quack
Scrooge McDuck: Since I'm the richest duck in the world, I am going to celebrate by taking everyone out to the world's biggest hamburger stand!
Launchpad McQuack: Can we order fries?
Scrooge McDuck: You can even order hamburgers!
I don't care if you don't understand this blog entry. I get it and it makes me happy.
Love,
(no longer)Cranky Scott
P.S. Amy went to a casting call today and was told that she would make an excellent high-schooler in the background of a TV show that you have probably heard of. More info to come much later on when the writer's strike ends and shows start filming again.

21° from a moving taxi
Not much to blog about lately. Many of you have been asking for an update because you start your day off right by checking our blog. Here you go for your Monday morning fix.
We had our first significant snow of the season on Sunday morning. It's nice to wake up and look out the 6th floor window and see white covering everything. You see some strange things when this happens. I didnt really want to walk around in the 21° slush so the pictures you get are all(except the 1st one) from a moving taxi on the way home from church. Enjoy!
This caused giggles from Amy. ^
See the skis, skees, skiis? He's hardcore on those Central Park black diamonds.

AMNH Gala
Last Thursday night, Scott and I were invited to attend the American Museum of Natural History Gala, by our friends Cole and Raymond Harbert, whose Father generously gave us his table. As we were stepping out of our taxi in our black tie attire, the photographers were shooting away as if we were famous. It was very surreal being within touching distance of celebrities like Alec Baldwin (who checked out my top half and calmly looked away when I caught him), the cast and creator of SNL, Conan, Steve Martin, and various others. The food was amazing, the performers (Tom Petty and Amy/Seth from SNL) were great, the free gift/swag bags at the end were pretty cool, and the auctioned items were....ridiculous.

Good Light
Retakes for Geneva School yesterday. Setup and tear down has gotten quicker for me. I can get all this up and ready to go in about 20 minutes now. Not bad considering it took me an hour the first time. I'm really happy with these lights. Alienbees or "bees" are not the best out there but considering their ease of use and quality of light, they certainly can do everything that a Broncolor or Profoto or Norman or Hensel setup can do. We'll see what I can get out of them during a less formal shoot coming up. I'll be able to get a little more creative.

Old Language, Still New
Via Origins Church, NYC:
Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art.
Thou my best thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.
Be Thou my Wisdom, Thou my true Word
I ever with Thee, Thou with me, Lord
Thou my great Father, I thy true son
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one
Dwell in me
Dwell so richly in me
Be Thou my battle-shield, sword for my fight,
Be Thou my dignity, Thou my delight.
Thou my soul's shelter, Thou my high tower.
Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power
Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise
Thou mine inheritance now and always
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart
High King of heaven, my Treasure Thou art.
Dwell in me
Dwell so richly in me

NYC is hollow
They are doing some construction on our street these days. I get to wake up at 7 every morning to the sounds of pile drivers and "your mom" backing up(heh) outside my window. They have dug a big hole the length of the block about 20 feet deep and 8 feet wide. You can look down in and see all the old pipes and wires and lines that have been there for a hundred years. Every now and then the building shakes because they are drilling or pile driving or dropping huge pieces of street out of the front loader.
Growing up in FL we didn't have things like basements or anything that went underground because there is water there. Here in NYC there is a whole other world of twisted, interlocking, rotting pipes and structures that go between underground chambers and passages that run throughout the city. "The Underworld" if you will.
Some pics..

but what I really want to do is dance
After work everyday, I take the subway across the city, then take a bus uptown to home. I could just stay on the subway, but when I'm not in a hurry, I find that taking the bus is better because you never know what you'll see while staring out of the window, or who you will meet while waiting for the bus to come....
I'm waiting for the bus today, enjoying my daily Starbucks iced coffee (shameless plug, one day someone at corporate will read this blog and thank me with freebies)and pretending not to listen to the red haired 16 year old fighting with her Mom on why she should be allowed to add purple streaks to her bangs, (she had some really good points I might add). My eavesdropping was interrupted by the sounds of loud bass and fabulous beats. The kid driving had his windows down, so all of E 62nd St was able to enjoy his awesomeness together. The guy next to me, who couldn't have been younger than 75, turns to me, and says, "would you care to dance young lady?" After spitting up the ice cube that had become somewhat lodged in my throat when he asked, I replied with, "heck yes I do," and so we did, I even threw in a few robot moves for good measure. His name was Marvin, and he loved life.

Roosevelt Island
This is where we almost lived when we moved here a year ago. We ended up in Manhattan instead. It took a whole year for us to get back and go exploring on RI but we finally did. We spent our holiday afternoon walking the river park and seeing the sights. Finally got to ride the famous tram too. Everything is clean and kept that way it seems. Not like the city where it's cleaned 'as needed.' It's nice but there really is nothing around to do. There is also a rehab hospital so we saw a lot of amputees which was gives you a strange feeling. We are glad that we live in Manhattan. Here are some pictures.
Walking the river.
The lighthouse on the northern tip of the island.
Amy sitting enjoying the view and the breeze.
Nice trees.
Nicer than Manhattan
...and a nice sunset to finish it off.

Faith like a child
Today while walking my class to their favorite home away from home, the gym, one of my boys saw a sign being held by a homeless man stating "God isn't real, give to me and not the church." My boy looked confused, but I didn't think anything of it, because he is naturally a deep thinker type with odd facial expressions, until we crossed the street and he reached out to take my hand. He says to me: "Mrs. DeVore, that guy is SOOO wrong, and do you know how I know?" "How" I asked, holding my breath for the answer, because really, with 7 year olds, you never really know...."because, the Bible is thousands of pages long, and who would waist their time writing that much stuff if it wasn't even true?!" His face was one of pure horror and shock combined. I thought for a minute and then all I could say to this 7 year old with wide eyes was, "good point love, good point."

Experiment
I've been face deep in School pictures for the last couple of days so I decided to take a short break and play a little. I used a white background for the kids so I wanted to try it with something else. Here is what I came up with. Not sure what to call it yet but I think it is pretty striking. I am leaning towards "Infected" for the title.

A night in New Jersey
We spent Saturday Afternoon and night at Erinn's wedding in NJ. We got to rent a car for the day and overnight. We intended on getting a Ford Fusion but upon arrival at the rental place were informed that only SUV's were available. SO they upgraded us to a Ford Edge. It was a nice little surprise. I think our existence in NY would be a lot different if we owned a car. It's fun driving around in Manhattan. Just make sure you have a place to park at night. We had to drive to LaGuardia airport at 3:00a to return the thing because we could not find a place to park in the city. It's also fun trying to get to the airport when you have no idea how. Remember that we have only been passengers in taxis going to and from the city.
The new Ford Edge. Nice orange color don't you think?
Picking up Cole and Raymond from their building.
The city skyline just after we came out of the Lincoln tunnel on the NJ side.
The Boss tipping the valet (tipping well I presume)
Bruce Springsteen checking out the family photos. Scott is so close to him right now, notice my sweet photo skills, they are nowhere near up to par with his.
Cole, Amy, Erinn, Nancy, Anne. The bride was beautiful, the ceremony was sweet, and the reception was a fun, 6 hour long open bar festivity.
The country club. I never knew NJ could be beautiful.
Celebrating in the fading sun. It was pretty chilly, somewhere around 55 degrees.
The Max Weinberg Seven played at the reception. They are Conan O'brien's house band.
Cole and Raymond
Amy and Labamba. He's a really nice guy. I told him "I love you guys" and he didn't get scared. I'm pretty sure he loved me too....just look at us.
